T
he evolution of the six-pointed Jewish star,
the Magen David," literally the
"Shield of David,
also known as the hexagram, or more rarely, *Solomon's Seal, is long and complex. Although it is now the most common and universally recognized sign of Judaism and Jewish identity, both within and outside of the Jewish community, it has only achieved this status in the last two hundred years. Before that it was chiefly associated with magic or with the insignia of individual families or communities. Yet despite its equivocal history, Jews have long been attracted to this design and have sought to ascribe to it venerable origins. In our own day, its universal Jewish popularity, especially as the symbol of the State of Israel, has made the question of its origins moot.
Today, the Star of David is the most popular and universally recognized symbol of the Jewish People. In his seminal work entitled the
Star of Redemption
(1912), Franz Rosenzweig framed his philosophy of Judaism around the image of the Jewish star, composed of two conceptual "triads," which together form the basis of Jewish belief: Creation, Revelation, and Redemption; God, Israel, and World. On the popular level, Jews continue to use the Jewish star as it was used for centuries: as a magical amulet of good luck and as a secularized symbol of Jewish identity.
Some people buy a variety of Crosses to create a collage of Crosses on their wall. I use a black magic marker on the head of the nail so it doesn't shine.

The of Process of making each Cross
My Crosses are cut using a Hawk
Scrollsaw
. This process is started by drilling a small hole in every
cutout area. Then the scrollsaw blade is inserted through the
(1/16 or smaller)
hole and connected back to the scrollsaw,
and cut. The Blade is disconnected from the scrollsaw and threaded back through the next hole and that part of the
design is cut out. This process is repeated for every inside cut. This is a very time consuming art known as
Fretwork
.
I then take the cut crosses and sand both sides.
Next hand brush stain on the entire piece. I let the stained cross dry overnight.
I start the lacquering process. I brush a coat of Minwax® Wipe-On Poly this is a very thin lacquer and I let it dry
and I sand the entire cross with a very fine 220 grit sandpaper. I repeat this process two times on each cross,
then do a final coat of lacquer.
After drying for a couple of days I do a final inspection and prepare them for packaging.
Crafts like this is a work of love, obviously the small price for one of these crosses barely covers materials (wood, stain, lacquer, S&H etc.)
