    Description

    Scott 386 variety.
The 1977 locally typographed 5¢ on 15¢ surcharged butterfly (Scott #386; Stanley Gibbons #448) exists in settings from two different printings. The first printing with the 5¢ at the first “D” of “Doubleday” or d-setting and apparently was deemed inappropriate; this earlier printing was placed into circulation and is extremely scarce especially in mint condition. This variety is not listed in the catalogs although Stanley Gibbons assigned it 448Ea.
The second printing, the most common variety is where the 5¢-surcharge roughly corresponds with the “day” of “Doubleday” commonly referred to as the “y-setting”. The overprint cliché of 50-subjects arranged for two 25-subject panes (5x5) also in position 21 (row 5/stamp 1) in the upper pane a major variety exists with the 5¢-surcharge shifted to the right 3mm corresponding to the “H” of “Hewitson”.
